“Life As Palindrome” Tanka 2219

(January 3, 2019)

life as palindrome*

an ancient ‘how many legs’

riddle posed by sphinx:

crawl-to-crawl willingly go,

walks and hobbles inbetween

*(The Ancient Greek Riddle of The Sphinx – the grotesque not the engraved stone monolith in Egypt – would meet a man along the road and eat any who would not identify the subject who crawls at morn, walks at noon, and again craws at even’tide. The gargoyle-guy asked the wrong trekker but once. The rest is his story, though perhaps just as unbelievable. I threw in gratuitously the bit about hobbling and then walking with a crutch before the final crawl. Made the riddle last longer.
