    • Trim tree – and large shrub – branches all through late Spring: the palm fronds – bot Sabal (cabbage and quite tasty called Swamp Cabbage – and taller more tropical-looking Royal and Queen Palms – get plywood window-covering sheets ready and stored in the garage with their quick-screw-in and washer hardware, and fill 100 or more empty and label-less 2-liter plastic bottles for drinking and laying out over black plastic for solar-heated hot water…when a ‘cane is near add 200 more bottles of water in case water plant pressure fails. The neighbors think I am nuts. White gas-fueled coleman stoves checked: same with lanterns and their fragile mantles, candle supply checked and dry goods and canned goods rotated and noted. Clean rifles and shotgun. The handguns already get that monthly if unused. Sharpen kitchen and personal knives. Make sure saws and shovels and suchlike cleaned and sharpened…but all that is stuff done in quiet moments in February. Stay ready. Saves on worry and stubbed toes. But I do need to get some more tarps. During a tropical storm or ‘cane I tump all – or most-all the container vegetables and other plants to keep them from “drowning,” and I move the compost bins (55-gallon converted trash cans…who love their worms – I can tell! -and secure their lids. Dump flat all stay-outside ornaments and suchlike: I use an old metal sideboard/winerack affair outside as a portable outside shower-stand. Takes about six hours for a nasty storm which may last four days or so of high winds and torrential rains. Like a nor’easter in Winter hereabouts along our Atlantic Seaboard. Make sure the first aid supplies are up to snuff in two small portable and one larger case. You know, what sane people do and I can emulate.

    • I have neighbors? Omigosh?!? Oh…you mean the people across the way who never (not ever!) take back their trash cans (bins?) from the curbside after collection day(s)? I un-neighbor them and try not to glare. At a certain age – just entered the last 300+ days of my 60th decade I behoove me to live closer to medical services, etc., and of course the library and computer net services…mine are too young to be allowed either to witness the neighborly(not)ness of the ‘cross-street gangs who think I just love to see their “cans” lined up like targets across the way day-after-day. Small price for a 25-minute hike downtown to the biblioteca…elsewhere would have been several hours to never…because I do consume beer and want not a sober Canadian to “T-Bone” me either in my pickup truck or my motorcycle whilst returning from a liter’s worth of dopplebock with perhaps a single malt starter. See: I do care for my fellow humans…just not always nor across the way.
